How Can Risperdal Cause Gynecomastia?
Studies have shown that Risperdal can inhibit certain dopamine receptors. Dopamine blocks the secretion of a hormone known as prolactin which stimulates breast development and milk production in women. In males, excess prolactin causes the abnormal development of breast tissue. Although gynecomastia is not considered to be a life-threatening medical condition, the emotional trauma of developing male breasts can be severe and long-lasting. Studies have found that gynecomastia causes significant damage to:
- Mental health
- Social functioning
- Self esteem
Risperdal-induced gynecomastia can be corrected with surgery. The extensiveness of the surgery required depends on the severity of the condition. Some patients will need liposuction and removal of excess skin, while more extreme cases require a complete mastectomy. Gynecomastia surgery carries serious risks and can result in lifelong injuries such as:
- Scars which are painful
- Changes in sensation
Risperdal Medical Studies
A number of medical studies concerning the use of Risperdal have been conducted, and have identified increased prolactin hormone levels and medical conditions including gynecomastia and galactorrhea (production of milk from breast).
- Psychopharmacology (1999) - Drug study determined that when Risperdal was taken in conjunction with Prozac, it had the potential to cause gynecomastia.
- The Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology (2006) - Patients treated with risperidone (the main active ingredient contained in Risperdal) found to have persistent elevation of prolactin for periods up to two years or more.
- The Journal of Child and Adolescent Phychopharmacology (2009) - Adolescents who take risperidone can “strongly increase prolactin levels,” leading to gynecomastia and galactorrhea.
